Titlu: Report: Honda “Is Working Very Hard” on NSX Successor, Says President

[Image: 2005-acura-nsx-front-three-quarter-623x389.jpg]

Plans to resurrect the NSX supercar badge are still afoot at Honda, according to Honda president Takanobu Ito. He recently told Automotive News that the company is continuing to plug away at developing a new sports coupe that will effectively serve as a successor to the hallowed Honda/ Acura NSX.
The original NSX, with its aluminum-intensive structure and mid-mounted V-6 engine, was dropped in 2005 after a 15-year production run. At the time, Honda was said to be developing a new supercar with a V-10 engine and output in the neighborhood of 500 horsepower. Those plans were scrapped in December of 2008, although a similar vehicle (albeit with a V-8) was campaigned in the Japanese Super GT race series in 2009.
The latest rumors suggest the new NSX could well be a hybrid — and by Ito’s recent remarks, that appears to still be the plan. We previously reported on this possibility when we heard the car could use a de-tuned V-8 engine with an advanced hybrid system, the latter equipped with a conventional manual transmission and capable of driving the car on electricity alone. Ito explained that Honda’s sports cars would be paired with hybrid technology, with a new NSX serving once more as a halo car.
According to Automotive News, the next NSX is still likely to utilize a gasoline-electric hybrid driveline. Details are still sketchy, at best, but some rumors have alleged that the V-8 may not be part of the package. Some reports suggest the new NSX could potentially pair Honda’s 3.5-liter V-6 with a full hybrid system, along with the torque-vectoring SH-AWD system (frequently seen here in Acura’s product portfolio). If so, total output could come in around the 400-horsepower mark.
Regardless of what will power it, it’s clear that an NSX replacement is on track. Ito himself says Honda’s engineering staff is “working very hard on it.” Could a hybrid Honda supercar live up to the legend of the original NSX? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Honda has begun work on a new sportscar in the mould of the iconic Honda NSX, president and CEO Takanobu Ito has sensationally revealed on the eve of the Frankfurt motor show.

However, the ‘new NSX’ will be radically different from its predecessor, with Ito stating that the goal will be to build a car that has a dramatic power-to-weight-ratio as opposed to outright power.

“I spent part of my early career at Honda developing the NSX, and specifically the aluminium body,” said Ito. “I really enjoyed that experience, and learned much, so it is my wish that Honda engineers have the experience of developing a sportscar like the NSX in future. Within Honda, our engineers are already looking at developing such a car.”

Ito declined to comment on when such a car could make production, but he stressed it would be a different vehicle to the original NSX, which weighed 1350kg and had 290bhp.

“You can’t depend on a high power output to call a car sporty anymore,” he said. “The original NSX was about high power but also good driving performance, and today power-to-weight is what we have to focus on. The NSX was known for its aluminium body, so when we develop our new sportscar we don’t want to copy Ferrari for power, but to also chase efficiency as well.”

A successor to the original NSX was originally planned to be launched in 2010, but was canned in December 2008 by then Honda CEO Takeo Fukui in reaction to the economic crisis and growing environmental concerns.

However, Ito is pushing for Honda to push its sporting credentials again, so long as they compliment its environmental stance.

“Our recent efforts have been focused on fuel efficiency, and that perhaps gives the impression Honda is behind with pushing the brand image of sportiness, but let me assure you that is not the case,” said Ito. “We will address that impression with our new generations of cars.”

Titlu: Report: New Honda NSX Heading to Detroit in January

A new Honda NSX is heading to Detroit, according to reports.

Honda has been very busy lately, prepping a Small Sports EV Concept for its debut at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show this week. The Japanese automaker has apparently found the time to ready another new concept for debut next year at the Detroit Auto Show.According to a report by AutoCar UK, Honda is preparing a possible range-topping sports coupe that could be the 'spiritual successor' to the NSX.

Currently known as the Super Sports Concept, it could be the harbinger of a new era of Honda sports cars that they currently desire.Honda Motor Europe President Manabu Nishimae said, as reported by AutoCar, that his company "knows that there are customers who want Honda sports cars, and we are developing and intending to deliver products for them."Honda also wants to be known as a more eco-friendly brand, meaning that if they do go ahead with the NSX successor it could potentially be a performance-oriented hybrid.

We will find out in January exactly what Honda is planning with their Super Sports Concept when it debuts at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

NSX (Concept)
Alongside the flagship, a new "super sports car" shares the role as the range topper for Acura. Acura didn't officially call it the NSX during their presentation, but everybody we spoke with following the presentation said it was indeed the NSX successor. I took that as good news. UPDATE: In their press release released this morning, Acura is calling it the "NSX Concept". Some text below is updated to reflect that.

Acura showed us the actual NSX Concept which will be revealed in Detroit next month. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed, but I can tell you that this will be one of the biggest reveals for Acura in recent history. Basically this is the car that was spied on the "Avengers" set late in the Summer, but it's clearly been further developed and it's also in hard-top form. Finished in a sliver paint, the concept is absolutely stunning, and carries on the NSX tradition of a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The design is muscular, futuristic, and sharp, and vaguely similar to the Audi R8.

Compared to the "Avengers" car, the front end on this concept actually has working LED headlights - there are 5 "squircle" projectors embedded within each headlight housing. The rear bumper is also virtually identical to the "Avengers" car but with a real roof and backlight and more "production-looking" taillights, the overall visage is considerably different. Like the "flagship", the exhaust finishers are integrated into the bumper. A really cool (but not necessarily original) styling element is the "flying buttress" C-pillars. The C-pillars feature a "pass-through" which appears to be designed to channel air smoothly around the cockpit and over the rear of the vehicle. It's like an elongated version of the flying buttress seen on the Ferrari 599 - the NSX has a much faster angle on the backlight, which naturally lengthens the C-pillar. The gap between the C-pillar and the glass is fairly narrow, however. For the record, this concept wore Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in 255/35ZR19 size up front, and 275/30ZR20s in the rear.

Acura wouldn't tell us anything about the engine or powertrain, but off the record they were quick to tell us that the announced Electric SH-AWD system with 3.5L DI V6 was clearly not potent enough for this car. It should be noted that THAT powertrain, with its 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and 3 electric motors, develops a peak output in the neighborhood of 400hp. Obviously with the MR layout, Honda has to engineer a very specific setup for this car, and we're assuming it will essentially be a reversed layout compared to the FF-oriented design which was revealed previously.

We are hopeful that it will receive a very special high output, high revving gasoline engine that is fitting of the NSX heritage, while leveraging the electric motors and onboard battery to deliver on the "smart luxury" promise of excellent fuel economy.
